Newborn Sessions

Ten teeny tiny toes, wisps of soft hair, chubby rosy cheeks, that little button nose, and, of course that new baby smell. Ohhh how these sessions melt my heart!

My newborn sessions take a gentle approach to capturing the beauty and innocence of your newborn. They certainly don’t stay little for long and that is why it is my true passion to capture your baby in the first few weeks of their life. I want you to have beautiful images, that you can treasure for many years to come. I love what I do, and pride myself on ensuring your photo shoot will be a memorable experience. It is an honour and a joy to be given the opportunity to capture these precious moments, and to meet so many lovely families.

I can’t wait to meet you and your new little treasure and document this beautiful time for you.

Warmly,
Brittany

in home newborn sessions

My newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home. Not only is this where you and your baby feel most comfortable, it's where you'll be making most of your memories together during the first few months so the photos captured in your own home will hold extra sentimental value for you. I will work with the natural light available in your home, often the nursery, master bedroom or living rooms have nice lighting to work with, I don't mind shifting some things around to make an ideal spot for some photos. During the warmer months I adore taking newborn photos outdoors as well!

Newborn sessions usually take around 2 hours allowing time for settling and feeding, with baby leading the session depending on their needs. Siblings are very welcome in these sessions, as they are such an important part of your family’s story, and love to be a part of the process.

When I arrive for our session, I bring along with me a variety of sweet baby clothes, blankets, swaddles, headbands/floral crowns, baskets, etc. The pieces in my newborn collection have a neutral, earthy-boho vibe with quiet colours and natural textures. Nearly all items you see pictured in my work belong to me, if something catches your eye simply let me know and I'll be sure if to have it ready for our session. I am happy to incorporate any meaningful items into the session if you would like to, for example a family heirloom or specially made blankets and clothes. I also have an extensive selection of dresses for the mums. There’s nothing quite like wearing a beautiful dress, to make you feel wonderful and amazing in your session. I also have a modest collection of youth/toddler size outfits for your older siblings to wear if desired.

FAQ

At what age do newborn sessions take place?

As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I focus on natural poses of your little one. Since I don't do any intricate/squished poses we have some flexibility in the timing of your session, which can be anywhere between 5 days to 3 months old. I find there is a sweet spot between 1-3 weeks to allow parents to find there rhythm with the new tiny boss you've brought home that's now calling all the shots hehehe.
When you book your session, we don’t set a hard date for the session yet. Once your little one arrives, please notify me asap and then we will pick a date that is suitable for your family. I keep several weekend time slots open surrounding due dates for each client family as I know often Dad's are still working.

Do you provide props or outfits?

I always joke with my newborn parents that you'll think I'm moving in when I show up for your newborn session. Most items you see in my images belong to me. I bring a bin full of items with me including outfits, knit blankets, swaddles, wraps, hats, headbands, floral crowns, baskets, boxes, blanket and pillows etc. But if you have a certain look in mind I recommend planning to have your own outfit for your babe ready for our session!

What should we (the parents) wear?

I like to discuss outfit recommendations with each client to ensure outfits are in line with the vision they hope for. Do you want a look that is more sophisticated, perhaps a loose flowy dress? Or go with something comfy and casual like plain tees/knit sweater and jeans? Hop on Pintrest and browse through 'lifestyle newborn photo sessions' and get inspired by what outfit styles you like!
Mom's: ask me about my client closet if you would like to borrow a dress to wear for your session!
A basic rule of thumb is to stick with neutral colours (white, grey, oatmeal, rust, blush, etc.), avoid patterns/prints or clothing that has any logos/graphics on it. Mix and match textures to add more feel to the photos (i.e. Dad in a cotton tee and mom in a knit cardigan).
Simple, natural looking make up tends to look best.

How & when will I receive my photos?

Your newborn photos are digitally delivered to you within 4 weeks of our session date via a personal online, downloadable photo gallery so they are ready for you to print, share, and relive at your convenience. Since you receive digital files you are welcome to order prints of your photos in any format you want. Feel free to ask me about printing service recommendations.

Will you take photos of us (the parents) too?

Absolutely! Showcasing the connection and love you share with your new baby is one of my favorite things to capture. Typically we start with some newborn portraits of just the baby, and then we will move into doing some shots of Mom and Dad interacting with their little one. Older siblings are welcome to be part of the session as well.

What should I do to prepare for our newborn session ahead of time?

I provide a Newborn Session Prep guide for you to read through after you book your session, I am always happy to answer any questions you have before hand as well!

What if my baby is fussy and crying during the session?

Honestly, I would be down right shocked if they didn’t at some point! Of course I expect babies to be babies. I try not to drag newborn sessions out to be hours long, new parents are usually running minimal sleep and I don’t want to take up your entire day. But we definitely take breaks for your little one to settle down, have a feed or just have a breather for a moment, whatever it may be. So please, don’t stress about your baby being a baby, I’m there until we get the shots we planned! Typically sessions take about 90 minutes, but can take up to 3 hours if lots of breaks are needed for your babe.
