FAQ
Where do Newborn Sessions take place?
Newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home. Not only is this where you and your baby feel most comfortable, it's where you'll be making most of your memories together during the first few months so photos captured in your own home will hold extra sentimental value for you. As a lifestyle photographer I will work with the natural light available in your home, often the nursery, master bedroom or living rooms have nice lighting to work with!
During the summer months I am more than happy to take your newborn photos outdoors as well!
Do you provide props or outfits?
I always joke with my newborn parents that you'll think I'm moving in when I show up for your newborn session. Most items you see in my images belong to me. I bring a bin full of items with me including outfits, knit blankets, swaddles, wraps, hats, headbands, floral crowns, baskets, boxes, blanket and pillows etc. But if you have a certain look in mind I recommend planning to have your own outfit for your babe ready for our session!
How & when will I receive my photos?
Your newborn photos are digitally delivered to you within 4 weeks of our session date via a personal online, downloadable photo gallery so they are ready for you to print, share, and relive at your convenience. Since you receive all digital files you are welcome to order prints of all the photos or just your favs in any format you want. Feel free to ask me about printing service recommendations.
What should I do to prepare for our newborn session ahead of time?
Some tips for making the session go a smooth as possible:
- Plan to be feeding the baby for the time I am set to arrive, it often helps make for a calmer, sleepy baby. Plus I love to grab some shots of babe being fed.
- If possible, try to keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before I arrive (although they are the boss of us at the age lol!) a sleeping baby is ideal for newborn photos.
- Have a pacifier handy if you plan to use one with your baby
- We will most likely use the living room, nursey and master bedroom to take photos in. If possible put white or neural colored bedding/sheets for a clean look and allow the focus to remain on your baby. I know you hands are full in these first few weeks, but if possible try to clear any clutter away from these areas that we will use to shoot in.
When do newborn sessions take place?
As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I focus on natural poses of your little one. Since I don't do any intricate/squished poses we have some flexibility in the timing of your session, which can be anywhere between 5 days to 3 months old. I find there is a sweet spot between 1-3 weeks to allow parents to find there rhythm with the new tiny boss you've brought home that's now calling all the shots hehehe.
When you book your session, we tentatively schedule your newborn session in 2 weeks after your due date. We can easily change this date if your baby arrives early or late, since that can vary by a few weeks even! I just ask that you keep me in the loop when the baby arrives and we can adjust our date if needed to work for your family.
What should we (the parents) wear?
I like to discuss outfit recommendations with each client to ensure outfits are in line with the vision they hope for. Do you want a look that is more sophisticated, perhaps a loose flowy dress? Or go with something comfy and casual like plain tees/knit sweater and jeans? Hop on Pintrest and browse through 'lifestyle newborn photo sessions' and get inspired by what outfit styles you like!
Mom's: ask me about my client closet if you would like to borrow a dress to wear for your session!
A basic rule of thumb is to stick with neutral colours (white, grey, oatmeal, rust, blush, etc.), avoid patterns/prints or clothing that has any logos/graphics on it. Mix and match textures to add more feel to the photos (i.e. Dad in a cotton tee and mom in a knit cardigan).
Simple, natural looking make up tends to look best.
Will you take photos of us (the parents) too?
Absolutely! Showcasing the connection and love you share with your new baby is one of my favorite things to capture. Typically we start with some newborn portraits of just the baby, and then we will move into doing some shots of Mom and Dad interacting with their little one. Older siblings are welcome to be part of the session as well.
What if my baby is fussy and crying during the session?
Honestly, I would be down right shocked if they didn’t at some point! Of course I expect babies to be babies. I try not to drag newborn sessions out to be hours long, new parents are usually running minimal sleep and I don’t want to take up your entire day. But we definitely take breaks for your little one to settle down, have a feed or just have a breather for a moment, whatever it may be. So please, don’t stress about your baby being a baby, I’m there until we get the shots we planned! Typically sessions take about 90 minutes, but can take up to 3 hours if lots of breaks are needed for your babe.
